Adele

Breakups suck. If you’re anything like me, sometimes music can help get you through the stages of grief. I realize several of these are pretty mainstream, like Adele, but they just had to be included.

Nothing- Katy McAllister (The Script cover)
Last Love Song- ZZ Ward
Everything I Ever Had- Lindsay Fuller
Lose You- sami.the.great
Once You’ve Loved Somebody- Dixie Chicks
The Last Day of Our Aquaintance- Sinead O’Connor
Jar of Hearts- Christina Perri
Somebody That I Used To Know- Ingrid Michaelson (Gotye cover)
Over You- Miranda Lambert
Someone Like You- Adele

Birdy

I love covers and 2011 was a great year for covers. This episode features my favorite covers of the year. I also have posted some videos for some of these. Check those out here. Enjoy!
Adele- Lovesong (original by the Cure)
Ingrid Michaelson- Somebody That I Used to Know (original by Gotye and Kimbra)
Sunday Girl- Where Is My Mind (original by The Pixies)
Wye Oak- Strangers (original by The Kinks)
Birdy- Skinny Love ((original by Bon Iver)
Alyson Greenfield- Gangsta’s Paradise (original by Coolio)
Finding Jupiter- Till the World Ends (original by Britney Spears)
Dum Dum Girls- There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (original by The Smiths)
Karen O and Trent Reznor- Immigrant Song (original by Led Zepplin)

2011 was a great year for music and I wanted to do a best of list. It was REALLY hard to narrow this down to my 5 favorite albums of the year. Rather than write my thoughts, I am going to let the music speak for itself.

Florence + Machine- Ceremonials
A great follow up to her 2009 debut Lungs.

The Civil Wars – Barton Hollow
A great debut album.

Adele- 21
Brilliant. I don’t care if it’s commercial.

Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes
I have listened to this album far more than is probably normal.

tUnE-yArDs- whokill
The album is amazing. The vocals, the loops, the use of instruments. Brilliant.

Adele covers The Strokes in this episode

I love covers and here is an interesting selection of covers of Hip Hop songs, indie songs and old songs. Enjoy!

Adele- Last Nite (The Strokes)
Neon Hitch- On My Level (Wiz Khalifa)
Ellie Goulding- Only Girl In The World (Rhianna)
She & Him- Oh Boy (Buddy Holly)
My Drunken Haze- Too Afraid To Love You (Black Keys)
Stephanie Lauren- Yellow (Coldplay)
Dev- Poison (Bell Biv Devoe)

I have recently been listening to a lot of Scandinavian/Nordic musicians. No, really. Besides Adele and I Blame Coco (who are British) and Hank and Cupcakes who are Israelis living in Brooklyn, it’s all I’ve been listening to that isn’t related to the show.
Out of Iceland I’ve been listening to Mammut, Rökkurró and Of Monsters and Men. From Norway, I’ve been digging The School and Ida Maria. Sweden brings Lykke Li and Robyn. I am becoming increasingly enamored of Agnes Obel from Denmark. See? It’s a real problem. Or is it? And why is the music coming from all these countries so appealing to me? I have no idea but it is. So now, for your viewing enjoyment, I’ve posted a couple of videos because really, what would the world be without YouTube?

Lykke Li “Get Some” From Later With Jools Holland

Rökkurró “Sólin mun skína”

Agnes Obel “Riverside”

Paramore- Use Somebody
Amy Smith- Rocketman
Ingrid Michaelson- Over the Rainbow
Cat Power- Sea of Love
Adele- Make You Feel My Love
Melissa Ferrick- Glycerine
Brandi Carlile- Burn
